What is a thermostat and how does one work?

Thermostats are often confused with thermometers and while they are boiler parts that work in tandem, they both work in different ways. This is also due to the fact that they have different functions. Problems that arise with the thermostat can result in loss of heating efficiency within your property. As such, knowing what a thermostat looks like and how it works can be essential to sourcing replacement parts. You’ll find this information below.

    How do thermostats work?

Thermostats used to control temperature within the home are typically one of two types – mechanical or digital. The former works by using two metal strips that expand and contract in response to changes in temperature. When this happens, the strips can trigger an electric current which, when it reaches the heating system, causes it to switch on or off as necessary. On the other hand, digital thermostats use electronic sensors to monitor the interior temperature of the home.

There can be unique variations of central heating thermostat that each come with slightly different ways of working. Generally speaking however, thermostats work by monitoring temperature changes in a way that causes an internal component to move. These movements can then be used to send signals to the boiler to dictate whether it needs to be switched on or off to achieve optimal heating.

Function of a thermostat in a boiler

Regardless of the type of thermostat in your boiler, this part will always be responsible for controlling the temperature within your home. This is true whether you set the desired temperature using a smartphone, the boiler display, or through the thermostat itself. The temperature you choose to set the thermostat is completely up to personal preference. However, it’s recommended that this is first done at the lowest temperature that you find comfortable and then adjust based on the season.

Although boiler thermostats serve the same function of maintaining a constant temperature within the property, they can be located in various places and connected to the unit in a variety of ways. This is important as knowing how the thermostat is connected can help an engineer diagnose the cause of any boiler thermostat issues. Examples of possible configurations include:

    • Wireless and battery operated.
    • Physically connected to the boiler with wires.
    • Programmable thermostats.
    • Smart thermostats.
